$400 of Repair Later, the Snapping Stopped

A full platinum bleach left my hair gummy in October. One strand stretched two inches and snapped. Repair costs hit $400 over five months, mostly Olaplex. Trims every six weeks ran $45 a visit. Elasticity came back in month four. I kept the platinum.

Two inches of stretch, then snap. That was Saturday, October 4, 10:20 in the morning, me at the kitchen sink with one strand of my own hair pulled gently between both index fingers and a coffee goin' cold behind the faucet. I tested three strands from the crown. Two held. The third stretched like cheap gum and let go without a fight, and I stood there in yesterday's shirt knowing exactly which appointment had done it.

The appointment had cost $310. Riot Hair, the last Saturday of September, four hours in the chair while a stylist named Wes foiled my whole head to match a photo of some silver-haired guy from a Danish street style account. I walked out with exactly that color. I also walked out with hair that felt like wet thread in the shower two days later, and I did not connect the two facts yet.

One detail from that chair stayed with me. Mid-process, Wes told the mirror that my hair was resistant and would need two rounds, and he said it the way a mechanic says the transmission is sealed, in a tone that closed the subject. What he never said was the word Olaplex. I did not know there was a word to say. That gap in a four-hour conversation is why the next five months cost $400.

the gummy verdict

Ninety seconds. That is all Dana at Studio North needed the following Tuesday. She took a wet strand, stretched it, watched it stay stretched, and said the word gummy twice in one sentence, which is not a word you want attached to your head at 34. Her diagnosis was over-processing from the double round, protein gone, bonds broken. Her prescription was an inch and a half off and a bond builder, and she wrote Olaplex Number 3 on the back of a receipt like a drug order. The cut itself was $55 on top of everythin'.

bottle number three, twenty-two minutes

The first Olaplex bottle ran me $30 at the Ulta on Route 9, and it comes in 3.3 ounces, which works out to about $9 an ounce for something you use a teaspoon at a time. The ritual: damp hair, product combed thru, twenty-two minutes on a timer, then shampoo and condition. Sunday nights, every week, four months straight. My partner began calling it church. I let her, because the alternative name was penance and she knew it.

the $45 dustings

Trims every six weeks, $45 a visit with the junior stylist at Riot, three of them across the repair period, and I resented every one til I understood what they were doin'. Broken hair does not heal. It rides down the strand til someone cuts it off, and the dustings removed the snapping ends before they tore upward. By the second trim the wet test had changed, and I jotted the result in my phone with the date, December 14, like it was a stock price. Strands stretched a half inch and came back.

the protein line I crossed

February was my own fault. I stacked a keratin mask, a rice water rinse from a video with 2.1 million views, and the Olaplex into the same week, and my hair went from gummy to straw in about ten days. Dry, crisp, snapping when I looked at it. The stylist who fixed my thinking cost nothing but a phone call: protein and moisture run on opposite schedules, and I had been feeding one and starving the other. I dropped the rice water, kept the Sunday Olaplex, and added a $26 moisture mask from the same Ulta run.

month four, the elastic day

The elastic day came in late January, and I almost missed it. Wet strand, two fingers, one full inch of stretch with a clean return, no snap. I did the test on four strands to be sure. All four passed. Four months of Sunday timers, $30 bottles, and $45 dustings had rebuilt what one four-hour Saturday had stripped, and the silver color had survived all of it, which mattered more to me than I anticipated it to.

the receipt ledger

I kept every slip. Two bottles of Olaplex Number 3, $60. One K18 mask bought in a December panic, $75. Three dusting trims, $135. A moisture mask, $26. A satin pillowcase off Amazon, $22. Leave-in cream, $19. Purple shampoo, $28. The shampoo bowl tips pushed the repair total to an even $400 over five months, on top of the $310 that caused it. Add those two numbers and you get $711 for one head of silver hair, and I have made my peace with each receipt except the pillowcase.

saturday, same sink

Last Saturday, 10:20 again, same sink, same cold coffee. Three strands, two fingers, one inch of stretch and a clean return on every one of them. The silver still matches the Danish photo. Wes still has my card at Riot, and the next appointment is a trim, not a reconstruction. If anyone in that chair says the word resistant again, the bond builder conversation happens before the first foil goes on, and it happens in writing on the estimate. Two inches of stretch, then snap, taught me that in one mornin'. The price was $710 after tips.
